Maximising Ecosystem Services and Pioneering an Innovative Business Model
We are implementing Innovative Forest Management and Nature Based Solutions through our affiliate Montanino Forest Management and for third parties. We are pioneering a Sustainable Business Model, combining Ecological impact and Economic benefits, while encouraging replication in the Market.
Montanino Forest Management (Società a Agricola a R.L.)
Our Montanino Forest is approx 373ha of predominantly Oak Trees located in the province of Pisa, Tuscany.
Our Forest is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), as part of the Etifor Group of Sustainable Forests (FSC® C181022), and represents the core of our mission, where we are working to demonstrate that working for Nature in addition to be a necessity for human beings can also be economically sustainable.
Our Forest Management targets improving forest resilience, implant of autochthonous species and maximization of Ecosystem Services:

- Biodiversity
- Water

BIOCHAR
In order to fully accomplish our mission and complete the virtuous circle of planting, growing and coppicing trees we need to sustainably transform our Forest Biomass into a permanent storage of Carbon.
Through Pyrolysis, our Biomass can be efficiently transformed into Biochar, a vegetable coal that is highly stable and stores Carbon for hundreds, possibly thousands of years.
Biochar can be used as a powerful amendment for soil in replacement of chemical fertilizers for Bio and Regenerative Agriculture.
In partnership with an American Biochar technology provider we are developing a facility for the transformation of up to 1000kg/hour of forest biomass, which will be the first of its kind in Italy.

Woods are Worth more than this
For decades we have been told that Forests are renewables and as such it was okay to utilize them for energy purposes (e.g. in biomass plants). In doing so we released back in the atmosphere all the carbon that those trees had slowly and meticulously captured, neglecting that Forests:
- Store carbon we simply cannot allow to free up and their growth allows to sequester more
- Provide essential habitat to 80% of all life forms above and below ground
- Protect our air, soil and their indigenous people and species
- Provide key Ecosystem services for both old and circular economy
Still today we seem to value trees more dead than alive, but this doesn't not make any sense in today's climate context … and it must be changed!
